I never expected to be hosting company so soon after my move. I’m longing for a kitchen chair and table as I offer up a man with far more life experience than me, a stretch of blanket and pillow.

Todd, to my delight, doesn’t hesitate this time and plops down on his side, laying out and resting on one arm. He picks at the fuzz in the blanket as I settle in beside him, sitting upright. I didn’t want to be too comfortable while playing hostess.

“Comfy?” I ask.

He nods and rolls onto his back. I bite my lip as abs I didn’t know existed flex in his obliques. He stretches out like a cat before closing his eyes and looking truly relaxed.

“Join me, you look stiff as can be sitting there. Just don’t stand, you’ll fall.”

“I’ve managed to survive this long without your counsel, thank you very much.” Despite that, I do lay out beside him, staring up at the shiplap ceiling and breathing in a rhythm to try and keep my pounding heart calm.

I grab the bottle we brought with us to the living room and refill my glass; a little liquid courage wouldn’t hurt. I offer it to Todd and he accepts a top-off as well.

“It’s awful, isn’t it?” I seek out his honesty as the too-sweet red liquid clears my throat like cough syrup.

All too quickly he agrees with me, but that smile on his warmly his usually stoic face takes away the sting of my inability to choose wine. “It’s pretty bad.”

“I grabbed it out of impulse and without looking. Do you know your wines?”

He rolls back to his side to face me. He looks to my face and down to the rest of me, travelling slowly over every curve as he considers his answer. “Wine? No… Whiskey on the other hand, I could teach you a thing or two.”

“I’ve never had whiskey. Unless you mean Fireball?” His face twists in disgust and he’s on his feet.

“Stay there,” he orders and bolts out the door and back into the rain.

What the hell… Did he just run off over Fireball?! It’s not that offensive.

A minute later though and he’s back, shaking off like a dog, his body glistening from the rain. I stare wide-eyed at him and wonder if he’ll now take off his damp sleep pants as he did his shirt.

“Why did you—” I’m cut off as choke on my words, watching him reach into his pants where I’m certain he’s packing something I’m not ready to see.

He doesn’t unsheathe what I’m a little scared of though. Instead, he brandishes an open bottle of half-filled amber liquor.

Am I actually disappointed that it’s whiskey and not his cock? Yes. Yes, I am.

He grabs two coffee mugs and runs back to me, plopping down like a teenager. For a man in his forties, he’s enviably spry and has an innocent quality to him.

“If we’re going to drink properly, it’s time for your first real whiskey.”

I cock my head to the side as I read the label.
